The DeepSizer 300 is a mobile particle size and concentration measuring device based on laser diffraction technology, designed for underwater use, e.g., directly in rivers or lakes at depths of up to 200 m. In addition, water depth, temperature and, optionally, electrical conductivity are measured and documented. The main application is sediment monitoring, e.g., for early warning of events such as floods and storms, but also for the detection of pollutants or microplastics via real-time monitoring in the selected water body. The device provides precise particle size (0.1–2000 µm) and concentration data (0.001–100 g/L) even under very demanding and heterogeneous conditions.
To use the DeepSizer 300, it is first placed at the exact target location in the water body to be investigated using an anchor or suspension device system. Depending on the operating conditions, the instrument offers a cable connection (RS485), wireless transmission (4G Wireless), or offline operation with data backup in the device for evaluation after recovery for control and data transmission. For measurements in highly variable turbidity, the DeepSizer 300 is equipped with patented adaptive path technology, which automatically adjusts the optical path length of the laser through the sample to the particle concentration, thus avoiding multiple scattering. Continuous particle size measurement despite varying backgrounds is made possible by a special differential process (“differential path technology”). With this innovative method, the scattering signal of the sample is measured at two different laser path lengths through the sample (short and long) and then subtracted from each other. In this way, the pure scattering signal of the particles can be filtered and evaluated. Possible contamination of the optical windows by the environment is prevented by automatic cleaning.
